Godrej Wealth is preparing to enter India's asset management sector next year, extending a wealth and investment management platform that already spans portfolio management services and alternative investment funds. Manish Shah, managing director and chief executive of Godrej Capital, said the firm is getting ready to apply for a mutual fund licence. The planned asset management company is expected to start operating in about a year.

The existing architecture

Godrej Wealth and Godrej Capital belong to the Godrej Industries Group. The wealth business already holds a portfolio management services licence and runs a Category II alternative investment fund. The group is also preparing to introduce its first private credit fund, adding to an open-architecture model through which affluent, high-net-worth and ultra-high-net-worth clients can access mutual funds, PMS offerings, AIFs, private credit and tailored portfolio options.

A mutual fund licence would change the group's position in that structure. An entry into the AMC business would enable it to create investment products of its own while continuing to provide offerings from several providers.

Godrej Wealth is targeting Rs30bn ($312m) in assets under management by the close of the current financial year, with a longer-term goal of Rs1tn ($10.5bn) by 2031.

Distribution before manufacturing

The company started operations in Mumbai in June 2026 and entered Delhi recently. It plans to expand into Pune, Hyderabad and Bengaluru in the current quarter, with Chennai, Ahmedabad and Kolkata to follow in the next quarter. Godrej Wealth is concentrating on India's HNI and UHNI segments. Shah said the group wants to put in place a full wealth and asset management set-up over the next year, extending its reach across investment products and advisory work.

The business sits within Godrej Investments, a subsidiary of the group, and operates alongside Godrej Capital, its lending arm, under a wider financial services platform. Earlier this year, Godrej Industries Group entered the wealth management segment with the launch of Godrej Wealth.

The demand case

Rising entrepreneurship, wider participation in financial markets and intergenerational wealth transfer are expected to support demand for wealth management services in India. Those three forces form the backdrop to both the city-by-city build-out and the ambition to manufacture products in-house.

For a group whose wealth operations are not yet a year old in Mumbai, the sequence is notable: licences and funds first, distribution next, manufacturing last. The mutual fund application, expected in the coming period, would test whether that sequence holds.
