W1M Appoints First Head of AI as Wealth Firms Build Technology Leadership
W1M Wealth Management has named Wenyu Bai as its first head of AI, reporting into a leadership team investing in operational capacity. Bai joins from St James's Place with more than 18 years' experience across wealth management, pension investment consultancy and AI and automation programmes.

W1M Wealth Management has created the role of head of AI and appointed Wenyu Bai to fill it, making her the firm's first holder of the position. The appointment forms part of what the business describes as an investment in operational capacity and the use of artificial intelligence.
A remit spanning strategy and delivery
Bai will be responsible for setting W1M's AI strategy and overseeing the adoption of related technologies across the firm. Her remit includes assessing potential uses of AI, supporting efficiency initiatives and considering its impact on client services. She will work alongside chief technology officer Edward Blake on implementation across the business.
She joins from St James's Place and brings more than 18 years' experience in wealth management, pension investment consultancy, and the management of AI and automation programmes.

Leadership framing
Chief executive Guy McGlashan said the firm has continued to enhance its client proposition, which he linked to client service, investment performance, global reporting and cross-border wealth management and planning. He said the business is investing deliberately in its operating platform as it attracts new clients, and that Bai's appointment strengthens the leadership, technology and talent needed to embed AI responsibly and work more effectively at scale.
McGlashan added that building this capacity now would help the firm manage greater complexity without compromising service quality, giving W1M a platform from which to innovate and remain competitive.
Timing and context
The appointment follows W1M's merger two years ago and forms part of wider investment in the firm. W1M reported 16 net hires and around 4.5% growth in headcount during the first quarter of 2026.
The creation of a dedicated AI leadership post places questions of technology governance and operational scale alongside the traditional concerns of wealth management client service. For a sector where reporting, cross-border planning and investment performance are central to the client proposition, the appointment indicates where at least one firm sees the next layer of capacity being built.
The material does not disclose the terms of the appointment, the size of the AI investment or specific technologies under consideration. What is clear is the structure: a single executive accountable for strategy, assessment of use cases and firm-wide adoption, working with the chief technology officer and reporting into a leadership team that has framed the hire as part of deliberate platform investment rather than a standalone technology project.
