Johnny Depp's artwork has arrived in China. The exhibition "Johnny Depp: A Bunch of Stuff Presents Figures of the Fringe" is now open at Modern Art Museum (MAM) Shanghai, marking the actor's first exhibition in China.

From New York to Shanghai

The show debuted in 2024 in a non-art space in New York's Chelsea gallery neighborhood. It is overseen by MAM artistic director Shai Baitel, who has organized exhibitions of Marina Abramović, Bob Dylan, Zaha Hadid and David Hockney, and who conceived and co-founded the art services company Mana Contemporary.

The Shanghai presentation places Depp within a broader pattern of celebrities turning to visual art. The source notes ex-head of state George W. Bush, Academy Award winner Adrien Brody and Grammy winner Jack White as examples.

The Shanghai show is Depp's first exhibition in China and opens ahead of his Paramount Pictures release as Ebenezer Scrooge.

Themes on View

The exhibition is organized around themes including "heroes and idols," "lovers and muses," and "masks and doubles," according to the source. Depp's film roles referenced include Edward Scissorhands, Ed Wood, Donnie Brasco, Captain Jack Sparrow and Willy Wonka.

A Career Context

The show comes a decade after Depp's then-wife Amber Heard accused him of domestic abuse, which the source says deeply impacted his career. Depp denied the allegations and won a $10 million defamation case against her in 2022.

It also arrives ahead of a potential screen comeback: Depp plays the infamous miser Scrooge in Paramount Pictures' Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol, opening this Thanksgiving. The New York Times describes the trailer, in which Depp says, "It's good to be back."

Beyond the Exhibition

Depp has plans to launch a "cultural journey" across China, per press materials, exploring the country's heritage, contemporary creativity and regional traditions through curated cultural experiences and exchanges. The trip is described as introducing him to historical landmarks and traditional craftsmanship.

For the art world, the Shanghai opening tests whether a celebrity exhibition can travel as both cultural event and market signal, with the actor's public profile and commercial ambitions arriving in the same frame.
